SMA is a fully constituted membership society that is recognised by Arts Council England as the Subject Specialist Network for British Archaeology in the UK.

Our members are drawn from all over the UK and beyond and consist of museum professionals, individuals with a keen interest in museum archaeology and a variety of institutions. The Society works collaboratively with a wide variety of other organisations including:
- Council for British Archaeology
- Chartered Institute for Archaeologists
- Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers
- Federation of Archaeological Managers & Employees
- Archaeology Data Service
- Historic England
- National Panel for Archaeological Archives Wales
The Society is managed by a committee which consists of a combination of Officers, ordinary members and co-opted members representing Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Activities:
- A two-day annual conference is held in the autumn in a different venue in the UK. It usually addresses a particular theme of topical interest and attracts an excellent range of speakers working in all sectors of archaeology.
- Occasional day seminars are also arranged to discuss current issues affecting the profession. These are often held jointly with other organisations, such as the Archaeological Archives Forum.
- A programme of practical training sessions and workshops are held throughout the year. They are usually led by members of the society in their own museums, or by specialists working in a particular field.
- SMA publishes ‘The Museum Archaeologist’ which contains papers from conference proceedings and a twice yearly electronic newsletter containing news, reviews, details of forthcoming events and short articles.
- The Society also publishes a variety of monographs relating to its work in developing awareness of museum archaeology issues, professional standards and guidelines
