The Society is managed by a committee which consists of a combination of Officers, ordinary members and co-opted members representing Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Activities:

  • A two-day annual conference is held in the autumn in a different venue in the UK. It usually addresses a particular theme of topical interest and attracts an excellent range of speakers working in all sectors of archaeology.
  • Occasional day seminars are also arranged to discuss current issues affecting the profession. These are often held jointly with other organisations, such as the Archaeological Archives Forum.
  • A programme of practical training sessions and workshops are held throughout the year. They are usually led by members of the society in their own museums, or by specialists working in a particular field.
  • SMA publishes ‘The Museum Archaeologist’  which contains papers from conference proceedings and  a twice yearly electronic newsletter containing news, reviews, details of forthcoming events and short articles.
  • The Society also publishes a variety of monographs relating to its work in developing awareness of museum archaeology issues, professional standards  and guidelines
